Learn what makes closed-back headphones essential for recording and mixing, with practical decision rules and a look at the Neumann NDH 20.
Quick Answer
Choose closed-back headphones with a linear frequency response and strong isolation for accurate monitoring during recording and mixing. The Neumann NDH 20 is a solid option for critical listening in noisy environments.
Why Closed-Back Matters for Recording
Closed-back headphones prevent sound from leaking into your microphone, which is critical when tracking vocals or acoustic instruments. They also block ambient noise, letting you hear subtle details in your mix without cranking the volume.
Trade-Off: Isolation vs. Soundstage
Closed-back designs typically offer a narrower soundstage than open-back models, which can affect spatial perception during mixing. However, for recording and critical monitoring where isolation is key, this trade-off is often worth it.
Decision Rules for Choosing Studio Monitoring Headphones
- Check Frequency Response: Look for a wide, linear frequency range (e.g., 5 Hz to 30 kHz) to ensure accurate bass and treble without exaggeration.
- Evaluate Isolation: If you record in a shared space or with live microphones, prioritize models with a sound-isolating design and memory foam earcups for a tight seal.
- Consider Build and Portability: Foldable designs and detachable cables add convenience for travel or studio use. A soft carry bag protects the headphones when not in use. Detachable cables also make replacements easier if the cable wears out.
